What's it all about?

Since 2008, Leave No Trace Ireland has worked to protect the outdoors through the promotion of responsible outdoor recreation practices through education, research and partnership throughout the island of Ireland.

With massive threats to natural areas on the rise—like water pollution, species loss and declining forest habitats—there’s a clear need to take action and help protect our planet.

People may be tempted to blame the degradation of resources on industrial pollution or largescale land development, but in truth the collective impacts of human visitors are substantial.

Leave No Trace Ireland’s goal is to educate outdoor users of all ages in contact with the natural environment on how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, creating opportunities for education on outdoor ethics, raising awareness of our unique natural heritage and the obligation for its continued protection and enhancement.

Our programme is underpinned by our seven principles:

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

2. Be Considerate of Others

3. Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife

4. Travel and Camp on durable Ground

5. Leave What you Find 6. Dispose of Waste Properly

7. Minimise the Effects of Fire

Leave No Trace Ireland is a powerful network of memberships and has become a leader in sustainable outdoor recreation practices in Ireland and across 90 countries globally.

Memberships make it all possible.

Offering a range of educational opportunities through workshops, certified training courses, events and schools programmes all based upon the 7 Principles, Leave No Trace provide an easily understood framework of minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors.

Although Leave No Trace has its roots in the countryside, the Principles have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere — from remote areas, to local parks and even in your own neighbourhood. They also apply to almost every recreational activity.

Practising a Leave No trace ethic is very simple: Make it hard for others to see or hear you and LEAVE NO TRACE of your visit.
